I GROWLED, SHOVING MY FIST THROUGH THE ALREADY-CHIPPED mirror as the memory of Natasha’s kiss continued to replay through my head. Once again I found myself being interrogated within my own mind; how could you let a girl like her go like she was one of the others?

I tried to remind myself that I couldn’t get involved. The rest of me wasn’t convinced.

I shredded my cot.

The interrogation rolled on.

Dammit! She wasn’t for guys like me. Even living the mafia life, she was so pure; so distant from all of that garbage. Clean in an otherwise filthy world. I looked down at my bloodied fist and took a deep breath.

I needed to forget her; I needed to find something to distract me from her. Her friend had come at the perfect time. I knew if she hadn’t showed up to take Natasha away, there’d be no going back for either of us.

She’d saved both of us from ourselves. Total bitch or not, she probably kept us—

A pained cry jolted me out of my own head and I frowned. Could that have been Natasha? I frowned, listening a moment longer.

No, though the sound was high-pitched and feminine, it was definitely a man’s voice.

Forcing myself to relax, I looked back at the chaos that I’d turned my room into.

I sighed. Natasha or not, it was worth it to check; at the very least I’d be getting some fresh—

“NIKOLAAAAIIIIIII!!”

By the time I’d consciously registered the voice calling to me as Natasha’s I was already sprinting up the auditorium steps five at a time. Through the door—too fast!—and stumbling out into traffic. A car horn blared and I braced in time for the sedan to slam me off my feet. Letting myself fall forward with the impact, I relaxed my muscles and let momentum carry me in a tumble over the hood until I had my feet under me again. The driver worked to slam on the brakes—my sensitive ears taking in the screeching tires and making me flinch—as I found my footing and jumped onto the roof of his car. Still rolling with the momentum of the crash, I hurled myself into the air, letting the beast within me finally take a taste of the night. The heat underneath my skin from earlier began to burn my skin as my joints cracked under the pressure and I allowed the beast to come forth as I flew through the air. By the time I hit the pavement on the other side, I was more monster than man.

The speed!

The strength!

The freedom!

Why had I never transformed before?

Coming around the bend like a bat out of hell, I stumbled once more and dropped down to all fours to reclaim my grip. Then I spotted them!

There were five in total, though a few looked to be having a few problems of their own already. Natasha stood, looking dazed and confused, in the middle of it all, her friend—the Andrea-girl—shouting angrily at the men to “shut the bitch up.”

I snarled.

So much for friends.
